Shingler bowled over by contract extension

Scarlets are pleased to announce that flanker Aaron Shingler is the latest to put pen to paper with a contract extension keeping him at the region for season 2016-17 and beyond.

The career Scarlet, who stands at 6’ 6” tall, has become a familiar sight on Parc y Scarlets’ pitch since making his senior debut in March 2009 against regional rivals Newport Gwent Dragons.

The 28-year-old’s athleticism in the loose, deceptive pace and aggressive defence has seen him develop into something of a crowd favourite in recent years. A stand-out performance against Ulster, in the opening home round of the Guinness PRO12, saw Shingler pick up the man of the match award.

Shingler represented Wales on the 7s circuit and earned his first full international cap for Wales’ senior side in 2012 as they picked Scotland apart en route to yet another Grand Slam; he has eight international caps to date.

The former Glamorgan cricketer has made 121 appearances in Scarlets colours, scoring 11 tries with his most recent in the dramatic opening PRO12 victory over champions Glasgow at Scotstoun Stadium.

Commenting on the news Scarlets Head Coach Wayne Pivac said: “We are delighted that Aaron has joined fellow back-rower John Barclay in re-signing for the region.

“Aaron was the leading line-out forward in the PRO12 last season and brings maturity and experience to the group. Both Aaron and John are leaders in our group, both on and off the field, and are influential in the development of the young guys in the squad.”

Aaron Shingler added: “Scarlets gave me my first opportunity at professional rugby and I’m excited to continue my development with my home region.

“It’s important for me to be playing at the highest level to continue my personal development and the Scarlets, as one of the top two regions in Wales playing in the top flight of Europe, gives me that opportunity.

“I still have ambitions to play for Wales and I feel that this is the best place to be to fulfill those ambitions.”

Scarlets return to Parc y Scarlets on Saturday 21st November to take on French side Racing 92 who can call upon a plethora of international names including former Scarlet Mike Phillips.
