A programme of activities is taking place across Carmarthenshire to mark Road Safety Week.
The aim is to raise awareness of road safety issues and what we can all do to make travel on our roads safer and reduce the number of accidents and casualties.
On Monday, November 23 council road safety officers will be in Coleg Sir Gar’s Graig Campus in Llanelli to deliver the Young Driver’s Programme and promoting Pass Plus Cymru; a scheme to help young drivers improve their driving skills, gain extra experience, and possibly get discounted car insurance.
Free child car seat safety checks will be held on Wednesday, November 25 between 1pm and 4pm at Parc Myrddin in Carmarthen. Officers will check that the seat is suitable for the vehicle and is fitted securely as well as being appropriate for the child.
On Friday, November 27, they will be joining the fire service at McDonald’s restaurants in Llanelli, Cross Hands and Carmarthen with information and advice on the Fatal 5 – speeding, careless driving, driving while using a mobile phone, driving on drink / drugs, and failing to wear a seatbelt.
Officers will also be teaming up with the police and schoolchildren across the county during the week to target speeding drivers. Offending drivers will be given the option of speaking to the pupils to explain why they were speeding outside their school or accept a fixed penalty notice.
Executive Board Member for Transport Cllr Hazel Evans said: “I am pleased to see that there is so much happening locally during Road Safety Week to promote safe, legal and responsible road use, and ultimately to reduce road casualties.
“I hope residents will take advantage of the free car seat checks as previous events have found that eight out of 10 child car seats were fitted incorrectly. Every parent wants to make sure their child is safe however, incorrectly installed car seats can put children in real danger.”
Chair of the Community Safety Partnership Cllr Pam Palmer added: “Road safety is a key priority for the partnership. A lot of work is underway but there are still too many collisions and casualties on roads in Carmarthenshire and there is still much we can all do to help reduce the number of accidents.
“We hope we can encourage people to drive more responsibly to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.”
