Responding to the major incidents declared across the country by Dire and Rescue Services, Cllr Ian Stephens, Chair of the Fire Services Management Committee at the Local Government Association, which represents fire and rescue authorities, said:
“As we continue to feel the effects of the ongoing heatwave and an increasing number of Fire and Rescue Services declare major incidents across the country, it is imperative that we do not take unnecessary risks and make efforts to keep ourselves and our communities safe.
“This means not having BBQs on balconies and grass, parks and other open spaces, and disposing of rubbish safely, including cigarettes, broken bottles and glass. Anyone who sees a fire should report it immediately.
“The pressures we are seeing Fire and Rescue Services under today demonstrate the importance of continuing to fund them for potential risk rather than just day to day demand.”
