Pupils at Bryngwyn School are getting more than dinner for lunch by taking part in hockey sessions.
The break time classes, coordinated by the council’s sport and leisure team, aim to get more pupils taking part in school sport support and to be more confident about joining community sports clubs
Coaches from the Swansea Community Trust have been visiting schools to get involved with the lunchtime activities and promote new sessions at Llanelli Leisure Centre.
The after school sessions are part of the Premier League for Sport (PL4S) initiative, through the Swansea City AFC Community Trust. They have been set up in partnership with the council’s sport and leisure team and Hockey Wales to further encourage them to take part in sport, but outside of the school environment.
Sessions are held Mondays 5-6pm at Llanelli Leisure Centre sports hall. Pupils do not need to be of any standard nor have their own equipment they just turn up and take part in the free ten-week programme.
The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “We have a vital role to play in ensuring our youngsters are as active as possible which in turn will help keep them fit and healthy growing into adulthood and beyond. These sessions prepare them for a smooth transition into community clubs and are free, fun, informal within a comfortable environment.”
