CHRISTMAS REWARD FOR BINNERS NOT SINNERS

Council environmental enforcement officers will be getting into the Christmas spirit to reward people for putting their rubbish in the bin.
Instead of fining people for dropping litter or not cleaning up after their dog, officers will be thanking residents and entering them into a prize draw for helping keep the county clean.
The ‘Christmas Spirit’ campaign has been organised by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy and will be taking place in towns and cities across Wales.
Our enforcement officers will be out on patrol and rewarding law-abiding citizens by offering them the chance to enter a prize draw to win ÂŁ75 courtesy of Keep Wales Tidy and a ÂŁ25 shopping voucher from the council.
Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “Keeping Carmarthenshire clean is a major priority for the council.
“However, as well as fining those people who leave their rubbish lying around or don’t pick up after their dogs; it is also important to recognise good behaviour.
“This is an excellent initiative which will hopefully help to raise awareness of litter issues and encourage people to look after the environment in which they live.”
Christmas Spirit will take place during the second week of December.
Jemma Bere, Policy Manager for Keep Wales Tidy said: “The aim of Christmas Spirit is to reward those who are responsible with their litter and put it in the bin. They are the majority, but we often spend more time talking about the minority, who carelessly drop litter and spoil the environment for everyone.
“It’s important to recognise that it’s not  just the responsibility of local authorities to clean up an area, but everyone who lives, works, visits – a street, park, beach, city, town or village to keep it clean and create a good environment for all.”
