Almost £1million is being invested in Llanelli Market and its precincts.
The significant investment is being made to secure the long term future of the market.
It includes plans for public wifi, improvements to the fire alarm, ventilation system and mains electrics within the market hall and Stepney and Cowell precincts.
Llanelli Market and precincts are owned and managed by Carmarthenshire County Council.
Executive board member for resources, Cllr David Jenkins, said: “This is good news not just for the market and its precincts, but for the town as a whole.
“The wifi will benefit the traders, along with shoppers who will be able to access it in the market and its precincts.
“This further investment in the town centre will secure the long term future for the market, which provides a large retail environment within the town.
“It will also safeguard around 73 individual businesses and 210 jobs.”
The work is being carried out by local contractors Lloyd and Gravell and is due to start in mid January.
It will take a few months to complete and there will be some disruption, however the contractors aim to do the majority of the work outside of opening hours in order to minimise any inconvenience to traders or shoppers.
It is hoped that the public wifi can be installed early in the New Year, options are currently being investigated.
Council Leader Cllr Emlyn Dole said: “This is once again excellent news for Llanelli town centre securing the long term future for the market.
“When I set up the Llanelli Town Centre Taskforce it was with a view to ensure that we achieve our goal in regenerating Llanelli Town Centre.
“There will be many different elements to that emerging Action Plan, things that will bear fruit in the short, as well as the medium to long term.
“It is heartening to see some of those things already starting to happen here in Llanelli.”
