Students at Coleg Sir Gâr are being encouraged to be responsible road-users and car owners.
The council’s road safety unit is delivering the Young Driver Programme to first year level 3 ICT students at Llanelli‘s Graig campus.
Suitable for pre-drivers, learners, and newly qualified drivers, the programme is delivered usually within the PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), the Welsh Baccalaureate and / or tutorial lessons over the course of the academic year.
There are between six and eight modules looking at various subjects from buying a car and in-car safety to be being first on the scene of an accident and illegal driving.
These last two modules are delivered in partnership with the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Dyfed Powys Police roads policing unit.
Council road safety officer Lyn Morris was at the Graig during Road Safety Week to take the first module which introduces the course and discusses everything about the learning to drive process.
Lecturer in computing at Coleg Sir Gâr Sue Owen said: “I have been booking Lyn into my tutorial sessions for a number of years now. Her talks are always well received and the feedback from students is always good.
“The fact that she comes into the classroom allows students to informally ask her for the advice they need. Lyn covers many topics that are relevant to young drivers, from the dangers of motoring to general advice for first-time drivers.”
Lyn was also promoting the Pass Plus Cymru scheme to help young people improve their driving skills, gain extra experience, and possibly get discounted car insurance.
Executive Board Member for Transport Cllr Hazel Evans said: “The Young Driver Programme is an excellent initiative. With better understanding should come better attitude and increased compliance, so that our young people will be less at risk whilst gaining essential post-test driving experience, when they are at their most vulnerable.”
