A wave of Alzheimer’s Society Cymru fundraisers from across Wales turned Bute Park, Cardiff blue on Sunday 18 September to raise money for people with dementia and their carers at Cardiff Memory Walk.

Over a thousand walkers are set to raise an estimated £100,000 pounds after uniting at Bute Park, Cardiff to remember and support loved ones affected by dementia across Wales.

Martin Pryce-Gill, from Newport, who has experienced the devastating impact of dementia firsthand, was among those who went the extra mile in support of his parents, who both were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s (a type of dementia).

Martin, 55 cut the ribbon as walkers joined together to raise vital funds for the estimated 50,000 people living with dementia in Wales.

” I am here today, because my dad passed away five years ago from a long struggle with dementia and my mum has just been diagnosed with rapid onset Alzheimer’s. It’s just so important to be here and be visible and to bring this to the forefront of people’s minds.”

While reflecting on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Martin continued,

“Today’s been a real mix of emotions, everyone has been really excited to be here for their loved ones, but also thoughtful with the Queen’s funeral tomorrow. My parents were avid supporters (of the Queen), so I have been walking for them and for her.”

Those taking part completed either a short 3km walk taking a gentle stroll through Cardiff’s Bute Park or the longer 6km walk.

The fundraisers stepped out to support people affected by dementia through some of the hardest and most frightening times, to improve their lives and help to avoid crisis.

Cheryl James, Alzheimer’s Society Cymru Area Manager, said:

“We are in awe of our incredible fundraisers, including Martin, who went above and beyond to raise vital funds and awareness for local people living with dementia.

“It was extremely moving to see so many people come together to honour or remember their loved ones. Every step taken will help us provide a lifeline of support for as many people affected by dementia as possible.

“Too many people face dementia alone. With the help of our brilliant fundraisers, we can ensure that everyone affected by dementia can turn to us for expert support through practical advice, emotional support, and guidance for the best next step.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this year’s Memory Walk Cardiff such a brilliant success.”
