New quiz puts your knowledge of TV living rooms to the test

  • The Simpsons’ living room is easiest to recognise
  • Half of Brits failed to recognise Monica’s apartment from Friends
  • Respondents scored on average 40% – can you do better?

A new study has found that The Simpsons has the most recognisable living room featured in TV shows, claiming top spot over living rooms from other famous shows such as Friends, The Big Bang Theory and Coronation Street.

The analysis from David Wilson Homes comes ahead of season 34 of The Simpsons debuting in September. The housebuilder quizzed 2,000 Brits to discover which famous TV living rooms were the easiest to recognise just from a shot of their interior without the iconic characters present.

Furthermore, David Wilson Homes has also created a quiz that allows TV fans to test their own knowledge and discover how much of a TV living room aficionado they are themselves.

80% of Brits can recognise The Simpsons’ iconic living room design

Living Room % Correct
The Simpsons’ House – The Simpsons80%
Monica’s Apartment – Friends 47%
The Platts’ House – Coronation Street 40%
Sheldon & Leonard’s Apartment – The Big Bang Theory 36%
The Browns’ House – Mrs Brown’s Boys 35%
The Banks’ House – The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air 35%
The Griffins’ House – Family Guy 35%
The Barlows’ House – Coronation Street 34%
Chandler’s Apartment – Friends 31%
The Byers’ House – Stranger Things 28%
Average: 40%

Taking top spot as the easiest to recognise living room was The Simpsons, correctly identified by 80% of respondents.

The second most recognisable living room was from Monica’s apartment in Friends, with nearly one in two Brits (47%) scoring top marks. However, less than a third (31%) were able to correctly recall Chandler’s apartment from the same show.

Following a similar pattern, 40% correctly identified who the Platts’ living room on Coronation Street belonged to, but only 34% could also spot the Barlow’s living room.

Females were found to be more likely than males to recall both Coronation Street living rooms, 49% vs 31% for the Platts’ living room, and 41% vs 26% for the Barlows’ living room.

Although Joyce Byers’ living room in Stranger Things was revealed to be the hardest to spot, it was the third most recognisable for those aged 16-24, correctly identified by nearly half of Gen Z respondents (49%). However, only 11% of those aged 55+ had the same success.

The UK, on average, were able to identify four of the 10 living rooms in the quiz.

Steve Mariner, Head of Sales and Marketing at Barratt Developments, commented, “It’s fascinating to see how difficult identifying these interiors becomes when you remove the famous characters associated with them. The Simpsons’ living room shows how culturally significant the cartoon is throughout all age groups. It also speaks volumes for the impact that simplistic and colourful designs can have, making a lasting impression as a living room.”

Steve continues, “Within our living rooms we try to keep colours warm and comfortable but often with a statement feature that creates a lasting impression. Small touches also help to make a room feel more like a home. But this research clearly shows how the brain is drawn to humans and characters in TV living rooms rather than the interior design.”

The one with an expanded TV living rooms quiz

The study found that the UK on average can correctly identify 40% of these iconic TV living rooms. If you’re think you’d do better than 4/10, here’s your chance to prove how strong your TV knowledge really is.

David Wilson Homes created an expanded version of the quiz which tests the knowledge of TV fans across 20 popular TV living rooms, giving you the perfect opportunity to test your knowledge against your friends and family. Nobody has managed to score 20/20 yet.
