Analysis of Google search data reveals that searches for ‘electric blanket’ exploded 342% within the past week. In fact, online searches for ‘electric blanket’ have reached their highest levels in five years this October.

With this in mind, sleep experts at Bed Kingdom decided to analyse search volume data to discover which items Brits are purchasing to keep warm whilst reducing energy bills this winter. The findings have been ranked below:

  1. Electric blanket

Online searches for ‘electric blanket’ have skyrocketed by 342% over the last week. In addition, an estimated 41,000 Brits have searched online for an electric blanket this month alone. Octopus Energy have announced a giveaway of 10,000 free electric blankets to customers who are signed up to the energy supplier. According to Octopus Energy, an electric blanket can save the average customer 19% on energy bills.

  1. Bed socks

An estimated 6,400 Brits search for ‘bed socks’ online every month. According to The Sleep Foundation, wearing socks to bed may help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. When your feet are cold, they constrict the blood vessels and cause less blood to circulate. Warming your feet before bed helps give your brain a clear signal that it is time to go to sleep.

  1. Fleece pyjamas

An estimated 6,200 Brits have searched online for ‘fleece pyjamas’ this month. In addition, searches for ‘fleece pyjamas’ exploded by 669% on the 10th of October. M and M Direct are currently selling fleece pyjama sets for £19.99.

  1. Warmies

An estimated 4,400 Brits are searching online monthly for microwaveable teddy bears, particularly ‘Warmies’, a famous UK brand of plush heat-up toys. A Warmie costs approximately 1.7 pence to be heated in a 900w microwave for 90 seconds, calculated using the current kilowatt-hour costs in the UK. In comparison, a typical 1.5-litre rubber hot water bottle costs approximately 7 pence to fill with water from a boiled kettle. Switching to a Warmie can save you 24% on energy costs.

  1. 13.5 tog duvet

An estimated 2,900 Brits are searching monthly for a thicker and warmer 13.5 tog duvet. The recommended tog for the winter months is between 10.5 and 13.5, whilst summer calls for a 4.5 to 7 tog duvet. It is essential to rotate your duvet seasonally to get the best night’s sleep. Argos currently have a sale on Silentnight Super Snuggly 13.5 Tog Duvets at 25% off. A single costs £18.75, a double is £22.50, and a king will only set you back £26.25.

An expert from Bed Kingdom commented on the study:

“The rise in energy bills this Autumn is causing countless Brits to find alternative means to central heating to keep warm this winter. Just as energy bill prices reach record highs, so do searches for electric blankets. Dressing warmly and keeping cosy in bed without having to turn on the central heating will help those concerned about racking up high energy bills. “
