Insurance Revolution has explored some of the best ways drivers can remain safe whilst driving during winter. They’ve done this as winter approaches to remind drivers of the risks of driving in severe conditions.

Preparing the car before driving

One way drivers can ensure safe driving in winter is by taking some time to prep their cars. Making sure windscreens are cleaned inside and out is vital to guaranteeing clear visibility while driving. Hot water can be used to defrost windscreens that have been affected overnight.

It’s also important to regularly check the condition of tires as grip can be severely affected by the cold weather. Legally the minimum tread tires must have is 1.6mm.

Driving in bad weather

When out in the harsh winter weather there are several ways drivers can manage their safety. This includes reducing speeds considerably due to the loss of grip on the roads. Drivers can also use a higher gear when driving in the snow to gain better control of the vehicle.

Additionally, they should also be aware of the risks that come with rain, wind and fog. The same advice remains and drivers should manage their speed while keeping overtaking to a minimum.

Winter breakdown kits

To stay prepared, drivers should consider packing a breakdown kit. These kits can come in handy when faced with trouble on the roads.

Some of the key items to include are;

  • Spare warm clothes & blankets
  • Ice scrapers
  • Walking boots
  • First aid kit
  • Jump start cables

These kits can be easily stored in the boot of your car and can increase safety if a disaster strikes in harsh conditions.
