A groundworks apprentice at Coleg Sir Gâr who is employed by Andrew Scott Ltd has been nominated for a Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Most Promising Apprentice award.
Pedro Lima, 24, who moved to Wales from Brazil six years ago, is currently working on the Cross Hands Strategic Employment Site Project which includes a £3m civil engineering package.
He is studying a level two NVQ diploma in construction operations and civil engineering services and undertaking specialist training on behalf of Coleg Sir Gâr at Commercial Operator Training and Development (COTS) in Llandarcy.
The CECA award is open to any trade apprentice in their first, second or third year who are employed by civil engineering contractors who are CECA business members.
Lydia David, Pedro’s training advisor at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “Pedro is an excellent apprentice who is constantly receiving excellent feedback from his site managers, foreman and assessor.
“With a good attitude and willingness to learn, Pedro has also completed ‘Prentis Iaith’ for Welsh beginners which has given him the confidence to use basic Welsh in the workplace and during his progress reviews.
“He is very family orientated and I’m sure his family will be very proud of him for being nominated for this award and for his achievements so far.”
Pedro particularly enjoyed and excelled in drainage installation on both the Cross Hands project and the £25m WEPA Papermill project in Bridgend, gaining valuable skills in traditional clay pipes, twin wall plastic, pumped rising mains as well as installation of specialist equipment such as sewage treatment units and petrol interceptors.
Marcus Evans, foreman from Andrew Scott Ltd said: “Pedro has been committed and has shown excellent advancement of his work onsite since he started in 2021.
“He can carry out drainage works alone to a high standard and carries out high quality concrete works which consists of installing and finishing.
“Since I have known him, Pedro is always looking to learn new skills within the construction industry and works well with everyone.”
David Evan Williams, civils director from Andrew Scott Ltd, added: “I can see great potential for Pedro to become a skilled construction operative and is already an integral part of the team who is respected by his peers.
“As he gains more experience onsite and through his apprenticeship, he will be given more responsibility onsite which I already know he will succeed at.”
