Ex Coleg Sir Gâr student James Owen paid a visit to the college to talk to media students about his journey and success of starting his own production company.

James studied creative media production at Graig campus from 2016 to 2018 and went on to do a filmmaking degree with The University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

After always having the dream of owning his own production company, James created his own called ‘ Stori Cymru’ four years ago and it has been a great success.

He has worked with companies across the UK  such as insurance company Admiral, as well as local well known businesses such as Carmarthenshire County Council, NHS Wales and Scarlets rugby.

Talking about his time at Coleg Sir Gâr, James said: “My time at Coleg Sir Gar helped me explore my skills as a storyteller and I learned a lot about pre-production early on. I knew I could film and I had a creative eye, but my biggest weakness was writing. My tutors helped me improve my writing skills.

“I didn’t realise how important writing was when producing a film. I thought it was all about the visuals and sound. I’ve since realised the biggest element that makes a great film is a compelling story!”

James gave a presentation and it was an inspiring talk for the learners who have similar interests and dreams that he once had in college, with students keen to ask him their eager industry led questions.

When asked what advice would James give to students who want to follow his footsteps in production, he said: “Start telling your story to the world and you’ll begin your journey as a storyteller. Wales is an anchor for creative industries and there are plenty more opportunities for young filmmakers.”
