Dear Editor
I’d like to bring our latest campaign to the attention of your readers.
We’ve launched See the Person, Not the Sight Loss to raise awareness of the sort of misconceptions the 111,000 blind and partially sighted people living in Wales experience every day.
At the heart of this campaign is a short film which tells the story of Eva, a young girl who’s coming to terms with losing her sight.
Like Eva, I began to lose my own eyesight as a teenager, and I think it’s important to bring stories like this to as wide an audience as possible, so people gain a greater understanding of what it’s like to live with sight loss.
We face a range of challenging questions and attitudes, and more than once I’ve even been told I don’t look blind when out with my guide dog.
I hope that by engaging with this campaign, your readers think about their own attitudes towards people with sight loss and begin to see the person behind the condition.
To learn more and watch the short film, visit rnib.org.uk and search for ‘See the Person’.
