RESIDENTS in four Carmarthenshire communities are being asked for their views on proposals to create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
The council is consulting on Safer Routes in Communities schemes for Whitland, Cwmamman, Pencader and Rhos, Saron and Pentre Cwrt.
Display boards showing the details of the scheme will be put up in each of the areas so that people can leave feedback.
The comments will form part of a bid to Welsh Government for funding for the schemes to be carried out next year in 2016-17.
The council is also consulting directly with local schools, town and community councils and the local members.
The Safer Routes in Communities project has been developed to create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists through the implementation of engineering measures such as cycle routes, cycle paths, traffic calming and educational road safety initiatives.
The aim is to shift away from car use for certain journeys, which results in reduced levels of congestion, improved local air quality, and an improved street scene, especially in relation to road safety.
Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “The support and co-operation of the schools, businesses and local people is essential and it is important that they are involved in every stage of the project.
“Key to ensuring the long-term success of a Safe Routes in Communities project is ownership of the project’s aims and objectives by the schools taking part and the local community alike.
“Any comments or issues raised will be considered as part of the ongoing development of the scheme and although it may not be possible to accommodate all suggestions, we will ensure that all responses/proposals are thoroughly investigated.”
The consultation is underway now until Friday, January 22 at Pencader Stores (Spar); Ysgol Y Bedol in Cwmamman (community room); The Hywel Dda Centre in Whitland and Daniel Davies & Sons Murco Petrol Station & Pet Store (Bargoed Stores) in Saron.

Details of each of the schemes are set out below.
Cwmamman
- New footway provision along Folland Road;
- Off-road footpath for cyclists and pedestrians (Amman Valley Cycle Way/Riverside Walk);
- Zebra Crossing, cycle logos and bollards; parent waiting shelters and cycle racks in school; and
- Footway improvements on Station Road; Tir Y Coed Road; and the A474.
Pencader
- Proposed uncontrolled tactile crossing point; and
- Proposed footway (general width of 1.2m) along B4459 from Maescader Estate to Tremle Farm.
Rhos, Saron and Pentre Cwrt
- Proposed measures at start of 30mph speed limit to include: school road marking symbol on green coloured surfacing; paved area to accommodate imitation gateways and narrow carriageway width to 5.5m; red coloured banding along the centre of the carriageway to continue throughout the extents of the proposed 30mph speed limit (all subject to consultation and further site investigations).
- Red banding along centre of carriageway along A484;
- Green banding to delineate crossing point along A484;
- Proposed footway links in Pentrecwrt along parts of Saron Road and B4335.
Whitland
- Driver feedback signs at the following proposed locations: West Street; Spring Gardens; B4328 Tavernspite to Whitland Road.
- Public Right of Way routes;
- Raised plateau with tactile crossing proposed outside primary school;
- Proposed 20mph speed limit along Market Street fronting Whitland Primary School;
- Raised plateau with tactile crossing on North Road;
- Kerbed pulled out on Station Road for a crossing point.
