PUPILS at another Swansea school could soon be benefiting from a multi-million pound upgrade of their buildings and facilities.

Swansea Council hopes to refurbish, remodel and extend Pentrehafod Comprehensive School to provide classrooms fit for 21st Century learning and help pupils reach their full potential.

This week officers will ask the Council’s Cabinet for the go-ahead for the appointment of contractors to design the improvements which would be rolled out across the existing site.

The provisional budget is in the region of £12 million but the scheme would be subject to Welsh Government agreeing to part fund the project and future planning approval.

The phased works would include updating and improving existing teaching facilities and layout as well as replacing demountable classrooms on the site which are difficult to maintain and no longer fit for purpose.

Cllr Jen Raynor, Cabinet member for Education, said: “It’s our ambition that every child has the opportunity to make the most of their potential and we are tackling school environments which are stifling a school’s ability to do that.

“A lot of hard work goes on at Pentrehafod to help pupils get the education and   results they need for successful futures and it is a school where significant improvements have been made over a number of years.

“However in order to continue that work the school needs facilities fit for purpose which can equip and inspire teachers and youngsters to success.”

If the Pentrehafod project gets the go-ahead it would be the latest project within Swansea Council’s QEd programme to improve school environments to drive up standards and outcomes.

The programme has already seen building replacements and upgrades at Morriston Comprehensive, new schools opened for Burlais and Gowerton Primary and new classrooms at Newton and Glyncollen.

Pupils at Lôn Las Primary are moving into a temporary school ahead of their multi-million rebuild too.

All projects have been jointly funded by Swansea Council and Welsh Government.
