A new choir of children from the Eastside of the city will help Swansea mark Holocaust Memorial Day tomorrow.

Cefn Hengoed Community School will host the city’s event on January 27 to remember victims of the Nazi Holocaust and those who have suffered genocide in other parts of the world.

The event will be attended by civic dignitaries, elected members, and staff and pupils representing schools from across the east of the city.

And as part of the commemorations 120 pupils from Cefn Hengoed and its partner primaries will come together to sing in harmony.

A specially commissioned flag will also fly from the Council’s Civic Centre to pay tribute to the millions of victims of genocide around the world as part of the Holocaust Memorial Day events.

Lord Mayor of Swansea John Newbury said: “We must ensure that the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution, and subsequent genocides are not forgotten, trivialised or denied because we should not stand by and let them happen again.

“Swansea is Wales’ first City of Sanctuary for people fleeing persecution and also the first local authority in the UK to have adoptedĀ the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child(UNCRC).

“It is therefore only right Swansea Council joins many others throughout the UK to support and promote understanding and co-operation across all communities, of all ages, for Holocaust Memorial Day.”

Headteacher of Cefn Hengoed Community School Sue Hollister said: “We are privileged to host the annual City and County of Swansea Holocaust Memorial in the company of young people from our Eastside secondary schools and our cluster primaries, making it also an Eastside community commemoration.

“It is eternally important to challenge intolerance and man’s inhumanity to man and to teach this to our learners.Ā  The 2016 theme Don’t stand by is a strong and powerful message which Eastside schools will demonstrate together through readings, song, music, film and much reflection.”

Primary Schools taking part in the event include Danygraig, Trallwn, Cwm Glas,Ā  Talycopa, St. Thomas, Pentrechwyth and St Illtyd’s.Ā  Secondary schools joining Cefn Hengoed include Birchgrove, Pentrehafod, and Bishop Vaughan.

The closing comment will be given by Norma Glass MBE, who is a leading member of the Jewish Community in Wales.

Don’t stand by is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2016. For more information go to http://hmd.org.uk/
