The most successful Chinese zodiac signs, revealed

  • A higher number of ‘successful’ people were born under the year of the Ox
  • The Horse comes in second, while the sign of the Monkey is third

The Ox is the most successful sign of the Chinese zodiac, a new study reveals.

The study, conducted by Financial World, analysed the birth dates of 849 successful people including actors, musicians, politicians, historical figures and more to discover which sign of the lunar zodiac can be labelled as the most successful.

The Ox comes in first place with 86 people out of 849 being born in a year of the Ox, which is the second sign of the zodiac, and corresponds to the years 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985 and 1997. Examples of people born under this sign are former US President Barack Obama, actors Meryl Streep and Anthony Hopkins, Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin, director Peter Jackson, and entrepreneur Walt Disney.

Second on the list is the Horse with 80 people. The horse is the seventh sign in the Chinese zodiac and the years it corresponds to are 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002. Famous names born under this sign include actors Clint Eastwood and Emma Watson, South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela, director Martin Scorsese and singers The Weeknd and John Legend.

The Monkey is the third sign on the list with 79 successful names born under it, in the years 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004. Examples are actors Danny DeVito and Tom Hanks, skater Tony Hawk, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and musicians Justin Timberlake and Dave Grohl.

Further down on the list, the sign of the Snake is fourth with 79 people as well. The years of the Snake include 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 and famous names born under it are singer Billie Eilish, actors Audrey Hepburn and Sarah Jessica Parker, entrepreneurs Bill Gates and Martha Stewart, and former US President John F. Kennedy.

The top five closes with the sign of the Dragon and 73 people out of 849 born under it during one of the following years: 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000. Among them we can find actor Keanu Reeves, singers/songwriters Adele and John Lennon, director Stanley Kubrick, and philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud.

The research also revealed some interesting trends within certain categories of people. For example, from the 65 entrepreneurs in the list, a whopping 36% were born during a year of the Snake, whose personality, according to Chinese beliefs, can be described as “calm observers with excellent intuition, and generally demonstrate intelligence, wisdom, and creativity”, all indispensable traits for an entrepreneur who was able to create a business from scratch and was fundamental in its growth.

Similarly, within the Athletes category, 11 out of 58 were born in a year of the Rat, making it almost 20% of total people analysed.

A spokesperson for Financial World commented on the findings: “Regardless of many not believing that the time of year you were born influences your destiny and who will you be as a person, the Chinese zodiac and its tradition revolves around the belief that a person will have traits of the animal their year of birth corresponds to.

“This is particularly curious when it’s underlined how the Ox can be considered to be the most ‘successful’ among the data gathered and the way the Ox in the Chinese tradition is the strongest animal, and a symbol, among other things, of wealth and persistence.
