Plascrug Community School has been successful in its application to be awarded £3,120.00 from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Education Support Fund to help support children from armed forces’ families.

The money will be used to buy classroom resources like construction packs and role play resources to reflect the children’s interests. It will also go towards employing an after school sports club coach, and to fund teachers to observe good practice at schools with pupils from military families.

The MOD Education Support Fund was launched in 2011 to assist publicly funded schools, academies and free schools throughout the UK to mitigate the effects of exceptional mobility and/or deployment of their service communities. The fund is available until 2017/18.

Headteacher of Plascrug Community Primary School, Menna Sweeney said: “This is really good news for the school and we are very grateful to the MOD for awarding us this money. It is our intention to use the  grant to help support families during periods of extended deployment, when a spouse and children have limited contact with the deployed parent.”

Armed Forces Champion for Ceredigion County Council and Councillors Paul Hinge said: “I am delighted that Plascrug School has been successful with this grant bid and was honoured to support their application on behalf of Ceredigion County Council’s Armed Forces Covenant Forum.”

He adds: “It is important that all schools in our county who may have children in their school who have a parent or parents who is/are a regular or reservist, take the opportunity to apply for this grant as it can make such a difference in the support these children may need in the school.”

Directorate Children and Young People (DCYP), which is the MOD’s professional focal point for all matters relating to children and young people associated with the armed forces, is the lead organisation supporting the fund.

The 2017 bidding process will commence on Wednesday 1 June 2016 with applications being accepted from publicly funded schools, academies and free schools throughout the UK who meet the eligibility criteria.
