  • New Twitter research has revealed that GTA V is the most frustrating game to play right now, due to bot spammers and glitches
  • A decade after its release, the action-adventure game is overrun by spam bots, resulting in complaints from 1 in 10 GTA players on Twitter
  • GTA fans also tweeted their annoyance around glitches and bugs, which disrupt the gameplay and are abused by cheating players
  • The research also found that crashes are the most prevalent problem with popular games, accounting for almost two fifths of complaints

A new Twitter analysis has revealed that Grand Theft Auto V is currently the most frustrating game to play online, as the gameplay is ruined by spam bots, glitches and cheaters.

The findings, pulled together by casino reviewers Bonusetu, looked at recent Tweets mentioning popular games and filtered by common complaints – cheating, lagging, bots, glitches, crashes and hackers – to reveal which game is the most frustrating to play.

And despite having been released a decade ago, the data shows it’s GTA V Online that players are the most annoyed by right now, mostly due to spam bots.

These bots automate various in-game messages, which monopolise the online chat and can only be removed by killing the spammers’ in-game characters.

Although they don’t have any influence on gameplay, they ruin the online experience for many players through incessant and annoying pop-ups, many of which are indecipherable.

Another issue with GTA V as identified by fans is glitches, which is an error that occurs when graphics don’t load correctly, characters get stuck in objects or surfaces, animations are incomplete, or boundary elements in the environment are faulty.

Glitches are very noticeable as they disrupt the gameplay and can typically only be fixed by the game’s manufacturer, leading frustrated players to quit the game instead.

Recently, global players also took to Twitter to complain about cheaters, who use everything from money cheats to god mode hacks to gain an unfair advantage online.

While these issues have mostly cleaned up on console, it seems online play is still littered with frustrating problems. Many have speculated that Rockstar Games reportedly removing 95% of GTA V’s anti-cheat system late last year points to an upcoming overhaul.

Bots, glitches and cheaters have become a bigger problem across many multiplayer games over the last year, but no title has received as many complaints as GTA V – with 1 in 10 players expressing their annoyance on Twitter over the last week alone.

Another game that players are currently experiencing issues with is The Elder Scrolls, with players complaining the most about cheaters, followed by bots and crashes.

The third-most frustrating title came out as Hollow Knight, with most players taking to Twitter to complain about the game crashing, despite people reinstalling it multiple times, running the game as admin, lowering the graphics setting and closing every other program.

Whilst GTA V led the way as the game the most plagued by bots, the title that had the most instances of cheating came out as The Elder Scrolls, whilst Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players tweeted the most about lagging.

Red Dead Redemption 2 – which has seen fans calling for a TV series adaptation after the success of HBO’s The Last Of Us – is currently experiencing a significant lagging issue, which may be caused by slow internet speeds or an overworked graphics unit.

Some problems proved more prevalent than others across all the games analysed, with the top five issues coming out as:

  1. Crashing
  2. Bots
  3. Cheating
  4. Glitching
  5. Lagging

Commenting on the findings, a Bonusetu spokesperson said: “Playing video games online offers various benefits, including encouraging teamwork and socialisation, so it’s a shame to see so many people put off doing so due to frustrations around gameplay and cheating.

“The onus is on developers to improve their anti-cheating software for online platforms as well as consoles, otherwise players will jump to alternative titles with fewer issues.”

Other games that were particularly bot-heavy, according to players, were God of War, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, God of War: Ragnarok, and Elden Ring.
