Back in 2009, the late Pembrokeshire ecologist, Dr John Etherington, wrote an eye-opening book called “The Wind Farm Scam ” [still available ,very cheaply, on Kindle and Amazon].
In engineering terms, the author showed that wind power is unable to meet either the standing or instantly variable electrical load requirement. Also that wind power has never been able to generate more than one-third of the installed capacity [ mainly only 25 per cent] and that the available electrical power is most often at the wrong time and in the wrong place.
Dr Etherington also proved that, for every gigawatt of wind power installed, a further gigawatt of conventional generating plant, (usually gas fired), is needed as backup, for when the wind doesn’t blow, or blows too hard. Windmills also require electrical power to start them up again when they’ve been stopped, and that has to come from conventional generating plant. The weather patterns across the UK and Europe are remarkably similar, so ALL the windmills in Europe will probably stop at the same time. A large High Pressure system over Northern Europe will cause severe electricity shortfalls.
Even the erudite, visionary Dr Etherington , who passed away a few years ago, did not envisage the 820 ft monsters now being threatened …..in their hundreds….right across Wales by Scotland’s Bute Energy and the Irish Government owned Coriolis ! [See Welsh Govt’s Datamap on wind energy]
