There are countless tyre repair kits on the market. It’s easy to see why too. Anything that can keep your wheels rolling and get you home, is a brilliant bit of kit to keep in your car.

But before we present our top choices, have you thought about looking at some cars for sale? Used car prices are finally starting to come down and there are some bargains to be had.

Oh, and we should also say that these are only temporary repairs. Each kit comes with some instructions, but you should only really cover 50 or so miles before getting a tyre replacement one you’ve used a repair kit.

Important things to consider about tyre repair kits

Tyre repair kits are just that – repair kits. If you have a full-size or even a space saver wheel, you should try and use that instead.

Puncture in the tyre sidewall? Don’t attempt to fix it with a tyre repair kit. Same for a full blowout.

Before using the kit, have a good look at the wheel itself. If it’s damaged there’s no point in using the repair kit.

All set? If you’re positive that you don’t have a spare and you’re sure the tyre doesn’t have a puncture in the sidewall and there’s no damage to the wheel it’s time to actually do the repair. Make sure you try to fix your tyre away from motorways and busy roads. Attempt to enter a quiet side road when using a tyre repair kit.

Once you have fixed your tyre, you should drive a short distance afterwards to check the repair has worked. Different kits come with different recommendations about how fast you can drive, but the AA recommends not exceeding 50mph.

Top 3 tyre repair kits

AirMan ResQ Emergency Tyre Repair Kit – RRP £40

The AirMan puncture repair kit is recommended by several car manufacturers, including Volkswagen, Ford and Honda. It seals the tyre by pumping a gel through the valve via the electric compressor that it comes with. It’s efficient, and effective and works for wheel sizes up to 21 inches. The AirMan kit is more expensive than its rivals, but we think it’s worth the extra cash.

AirMan ResQ Roadside Tyre Repair Kit – RRP £29.99

Another quality AirMan product. This kit basically works in the same way as the repair kit above, except that the maximum size of the wheel is 17 inches, not 21. So, this is only

suitable for smaller cars. It is usefully a bit cheaper than the full fat kit though.

Tyre Doctor Tyre Puncture Repair Kit – RRP £9.49

A small, basic and very reasonably priced kit. It’s not the easiest kit to use and you’ll have to have some mechanical skills in order to use it. But if you do know what you’re doing this is a quality product that doesn’t take up a lot of room in your boot.
