Members of Prospect union working at Welsh Government are to take strike action on 15 March in a dispute over pay, staff resources and redundancy terms.

As well as strike action, workers will take continuous action short of a strike from 16 March. This will include only working contracted hours and an overtime ban.

There will be a picket line at the Welsh Government offices in Cathays Park from 08:00hrs to 10:00hrs.

Welsh Government is the devolved administration for Wales. The Welsh Government’s responsibilities include education, health, transport and the environment amongst many others. As a Government, the organisation makes decisions on matters regarding these areas for Wales as a whole, proposes Welsh laws (Senedd Bills), while developing and implementing policies.

Members of Prospect working at a number of different public sector employers are taking this action across the country. This is the largest industrial action Prospect members have taken in more than a decade.

Prospect represents tens of thousands of specialist, technical, professional, managerial and scientific staff in the Civil Service.

Alison Smith, Vice President of Prospect’s Public Services Sector and Branch Vice Chair said:

“Members have turned out in large numbers to send a message that they are fed up of seeing their incomes dramatically decline in real terms – they have had enough.  They worked hard during the pandemic to keep Wales safe and to help it thrive whilst we have seen no real terms pay increases and inflation hit 13% in the Autumn. Many of us are struggling to pay our bills and feel that the pressure has become relentless with no let-up in sight.”

Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect, said:

“Our members in Welsh Government and the rest of the public sector have seen their incomes decline by up to 26% over the past 13 years and their work taken for granted – they have had enough.

“Bills are rocketing and pay is falling ever further behind the private sector, leaving our members with no option but to take industrial action.

“We will continue our campaign until the government comes up with a meaningful offer. If it doesn’t do so soon, we may be left with no Civil Service to protect
