Haaland matches Suárez’s Premier League peak scoring tally after 26 games

  • Haaland matches Suárez’s 2013/14 Premier League scoring rate through 26 games
  • Haaland can pull ahead of Suarez’s record if he hits 2 or more against Suárez’s former club Liverpool, City’s next league game
  • Haaland is on course for 40 goals after 38 games, beating the 34 goal all-time Premier League record set over 42 games by six goals

Erling Haaland has matched Luis Suárez’s 2013/14 Premier League tally of 28 goals after 26 games, and can beat Suárez’s rate through 27 games if he scores two or more goals in Manchester City’s next game against Suárez’s former club Liverpool.

Casino comparison site KingCasinoBonus compiled the data from fbref.com for all Premier League goal scorers who have scored 25 goals or more in a season, then charted the scoring rates for their best goal-scoring seasons to see how Erling Haaland’s stellar season stacks up against other Premier League all-time great seasons.

Haaland currently sits at 28 goals after 26 games played, a scoring rate of 1.077 goals per game. This is an exceptional achievement, which previously had only been managed by Luis Suárez’s performance through 26 games in his fantastic 2013/14 Premier League campaign for Liverpool. If Haaland scores two or more goals in Manchester City’s next game against Liverpool, Suárez’s former club, he will beat Suárez’s tally of 29 goals after 27 games, a scoring rate of 1.074 goals per game. With at least two goals in the next game, Haaland would have a minimum rate of 1.111 goals per game with at least 30 goals after 27 games.

In 2013/14, Suárez managed to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s 31 goal Premier League record for a 38-game season in that outstanding season, scoring another three goals in his last seven games to complete his campaign with 31 goals. After 33 games, Suárez’s scoring rate finished at 0.939 goals per game.

As it stands, Haaland doesn’t face a truncated season like Suárez, who started his 2013/14 campaign five games late due to a ban, and the all-time scoring records are firmly in his sights. The 38-game Premier League scoring record belongs to Mohamed Salah, with 32 league goals in the 2017/18 season for Liverpool. Haaland is comfortably ahead of Salah’s record season’s tally after 26 games: Salah managed to score 22 goals after 26 games, whereas Haaland has an extra six goals at the same point with 28 in total. Salah scored at a rate of 0.846 goals per game by match 26 and broadly continued at that rate to finish at 32 goals after 36 games played, a scoring rate for the season of 0.889 goals per game. Haaland has 12 games to score five goals to beat this. At his current rate of 1.077 goals per game, he stands to do that in five games’ time.

Just 33 goals might be relatively disappointing after Haaland’s imperious goal-scoring season so far; his performances suggest there is far more in store for him this season. Haaland’s scoring rate hasn’t dropped below one goal per game once this season, and the quality he has displayed in front of goal so far looks only to continue. If he keeps his 1.077 goals per game scoring rate and plays in all 12 of Manchester City’s remaining league matches, he is on course to score a staggering 40 league goals. This would be exceptional in the Premier League record books, as the all-time outright scoring record across a season is 34 goals. This was set by Andy Cole for Newcastle United in 1992/93 over 40 games and matched by Alan Shearer for Blackburn Rovers in 1993/94 over 42 games. Haaland would beat this record by six goals with only a possible 38 games for him to play in 2022/23.

A spokesperson speaking on behalf of KingCasinoBonus commented on the findings: “Haaland has been a revelation since joining Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. He has been simply peerless this season, and it is a testament to his ability that comparisons to him can only be drawn with some of the best goal scoring seasons in the history of the Premier League. It will be fascinating to see how he completes the final games of the season since this is shaping up to be one of the Premier League’s all-time best performances across a season from a player”.
