Some 24 teenage girls from two Carmarthen schools will be taking part in a prestigious rugby competition.
The rugby loving teens from Queen Elizabeth High and Bro Myrddin schools will battle it out at Roslyn Park later this month.
It comes after the council’s sport and leisure West team linked up with the Welsh Rugby Union and local rugby clubs to encourage more girls into the game.
The 15-18 year-olds, many of whom who have never played rugby before, are being guided through a 10-week programme culminating in the schools seven event in London. They have also been invited to watch the women’s Wales v Italy match.
The council’s executive board for leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “Our aim is to encourage as many girls as possible in Carmarthenshire to lead healthy and active lifestyles by taking part in sport right through to helping them integrate confidently into community clubs. Some of these girls have never played any sport before, let alone rugby, and what a fantastic achievement to be taking part in a competition such as this. Well done girls!”
Some of the group are already training with Carmarthen Quins U18s on a Wednesday evening.
Most of the training kit has been provided but the girls are looking for someone to sponsor sweatshirts.
