Morgan Daniel, aged 12 and from Nelson, was invited on a private tour of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Penallta House headquarters to celebrate him winning a train naming competition hosted by Transport for Wales.
The new Class 231 train unveiled in Caerphilly recently was named ‘Sultan’ by Morgan. Morgan currently attends Ysgol Cwm Rhymni and chose the winning name while he was a pupil at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Allta, Ystrad Mynach.
The Mayor of the Caerphilly County Borough, Cllr Liz Aldworth, was joined by the Council’s Leader, Cllr Sean Morgan, and Cllr Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education and Communities, in leading Morgan and his parents on a tour of the Council Chamber and Mayor’s Parlour.
Morgan said “I wanted to name it Sultan after the sculpture in Penalllta Park, which is to memorialise the ponies that worked and died in the pits.
Since it’s so close to where I live, my friends live and where my school was, I wanted to name it after our local heritage and culture.”
Mayor Cllr Aldworth added “We were delighted to welcome Morgan and his parents to our headquarters which are adjacent to Penallta Park, home to Sultan the pit pony. My congratulations to Morgan on winning the competition; his entry was incredibly well thought out and he spoke exceptionally well on the day of the unveiling.”
