Thanks to local donations, Hywel Dda Health Charities has bought 50 mobile devices for heart patients across the Hywel Dda University Health Board area.

The Kardia devices are used at home by patients across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire to assess their heart rate and rhythm.

Jenny Matthews, Advanced Nurse Practitioner for Community Cardiology (who is pictured with one of the devices), said: “These devices are portable and patients link them to an app on their phone. If they get palpitations or unusual heart rhythms, patients can take a reading using their fingers and this is reviewed by the Cardio-Respiratory Department to see if medication is needed.

“Patients who can benefit from this at-home service are identified in one of the nine clinics a week we hold across our three counties.”

Nicola Llewelyn, Head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
