Story of Welsh heroine, Jemima (Cwmni Theatr Arad Goch) comes to Carmarthen

STORY OF WELSH HEROINE ARRIVES IN CARMARTHEN

Cwmni Theatr Arad Goch’s new summer production, Jemima, will take to the stage at The Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen on Wednesday 28th June at 1:00pm and Thursday 29th June at 10:00am.

A brand-new Welsh Language production written and directed by Jeremy Turner and suitable for children aged 7 to 11, Jemima tells the story of one of the most important women in Welsh history – Jemima Nicholas.

Jemima Nicholas lived in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, during the 18th century. Whilst she was in her late forties, Britain was in the midst of a war with France. A fleet of French ships intended on invading Fishguard in order to use it as a base to launch an attack on Britain. Once Jemima found out about this, she organised a group of women, carrying pitchforks and wearing their traditional Welsh costumes, to fight against the French soldiers. The story goes that they faced the French army, forcing them to surrender. This ultimately stopped the invasion on Britain completely.

Cardigan-born Deborah Harries can trace her family tree back to Jemima Nicholas. Deborah says, “I’m very proud to be a descendant of Jemima Nicholas. She was my great x8 aunt on my mother’s side. I’ve always loved the story about how she rounded up the drunken French soldiers with only a pitchfork and saved us from a French invasion.  It’s wonderful that Arad Goch are sharing Jemima’s story in their show and telling the children of Wales about the heroine Jemima Fawr. Long may the legend continue! “
