Environmental improvements have been introduced on a Sandfields street.
Bedded plants and upgraded paving have been put in place on Vincent Street outside St Helen’s Primary School.
The £20,000 improvements are being funded by Swansea Council and the Greener Living Spaces partnership project between Groundwork and Marks and Spencer.
Children from St Helen’s Primary School have been actively involved in putting the improvements in place. The project, forming part of the Sandfields Renewal Area scheme, also includes improved school gates.
The Sandfields Renewal Area scheme that’s on-going in the community includes housing and environmental improvements, thanks to an investment worth millions of pounds. Funding has come from a number of sources, including Welsh Government renewal area funding, utility company funding and the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places programme.
Cllr Andrea Lewis, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Next Generation Services, said: “The Sandfields Renewal Area project is having a positive impact in the local area. Not only are scores of families benefitting from more energy-efficient homes and cheaper fuel bills, but the community as a whole is also benefitting thanks to landscaping improvements of this kind.
“We’re delighted to have worked in close partnership with Groundwork, Marks and Spencer and the children of St Helen’s Primary School on a project that will boost the pupils’ skills, enhance the appearance of the area and further foster a sense of community pride.
“Even more residents in the Sandfields community will also benefit in future because of similar improvements at scores of other homes.”
About 80 homes benefitted during the first phase of the Sandfields Renewal Area project. Works included external wall insulation, loft insulation and boiler replacements for qualifying residents. External repairs are also being carried out where significant disrepair is identified, such as roof defects. A further 90 homes will soon benefit during a second phase of works, with others also following in future, subject to funding.
