Obesity levels in these Welsh areas are amongst the highest in the country

Data has suggested that in 2021, over 60% of people living in Wales were classed as overweight or obese and with the UK having one of the highest obesity rates in Europe, new research has revealed the top 20 Welsh areas where obesity levels are at their highest.
Health experts at Now Patient have looked into the percentage of adults classified as overweight or obese in England, Scotland and Wales to reveal the areas with the highest and lowest obesity rates. They also looked into the number of Google searches for weight solutions from April 2022 – March 2023 to reveal the most weight-conscious areas of the UK.

The research also revealed the following:
  • Blaenau Gwent is home to the highest number of overweight people in Wales, with 79.9% of residents classified as overweight or obese. Following in second and third place are Merthyr Tydfil and Torfaen with the towns’ obesity rates totalling 77.0% and 73.9% respectively.

  • In contrast, the Welsh area with the lowest obesity rate is the Vale of Glamorgan at 56.0%.

  • Caerphilly has been named the UK’s most weight-conscious area with 355 searches for weight loss solutions per 10,000 people. Following in second and third place are County Durham and Bridgend with 305 and 164 searches per 10,000 people respectively.
