Cult Beauty a leading online beauty retailer, has delved into the fascinating world of beauty spending and revealed the top ten nations that are the most beauty obsessed. The study examined consumer spending on beauty products and analysed popular product preferences in each country per capita.

Topping the list as the most beauty-obsessed nation is Japan, where beauty and personal care expenditures average £241.83 per person annually. The rise of Gen-Zs and their passion for social media have heavily influenced Japan’s beauty market, with younger generations spending up to 20 percent more on makeup and skincare than the baby boomers. Lip tints reign as the most popular product in the country with sales rocketing to £10.2 billion per year.

In second place, is the United States where Americans spend on average £194.17 per person annually on beauty products. The country is home to some of the largest beauty stores and cosmetic brands in the world, attracting beauty enthusiasts from far and wide. Foundation emerges as the best-selling product in the US, with sales totalling a staggering £18 billion per year.

South Korea secures the third spot, with an average annual spending of 185.49 per person on beauty products. Known for its iconic K-beauty industry, South Korea’s expertise in skincare, makeup, and hair care has made it a major player in the global beauty market. BB Cream takes centre stage as the nation’s top beauty purchase, generating sales of £5.4 billion per year.

The United Kingdom claims the fourth position, with an average annual spending £184.06 per person on beauty products. While face and body care remain popular, Brits are obsessed with at-home manicures and pedicures. Nail polish sales soar to an impressive £7 billion, influenced by viral TikTok trends and inspired Pinterest boards for ‘cool nail designs’.

Australia lands in fifth place, with an average annual spending of £182.99 per person on beauty essentials. The nation’s dedication to hair care is extremely evident, with Australians investing £934 million per year in shampoo products.
