An award-winning ceramics artist has been tasked with bringing his signature style to a new homes development near Cowbridge.

Bellway Homes has commissioned artist Jin Eui Kim to create a piece of public art and to design house numbers for the properties at Edenbrook.

Edenbrook is a collection of 26 new four-bedroom family homes which the developer is building on land off Badgers Brook Rise in Ystradowen, a Vale of Glamorgan village around three miles from Cowbridge.

Jin’s public artwork will act as a screen for a pump station at the development, while providing a visual point of interest for residents and visitors.

Jin said: “For the pump station project I’m looking at using metal or creating a different type of surface to create a three-dimensional effect.

“Crafting a public creation on this scale is a new challenge for me, which I’m looking forward to. With ceramics, I have a limit to the size of the work I can do because it must fit inside the kiln.

“This is a great opportunity for me to create something larger, using different materials to those I usually work with.

“I’m really excited to be using my theme from my ceramics work to show how the three-dimensional effect can be transferred to a different type of work.

“I’ve put together several ideas, so the next stage will be for me to make smaller scale models of them using wood or plaster to show to Bellway, before I move on to create the final piece.”

Jin, who is originally from South Korea, graduated from Cardiff School of Art & Design with an MA and PhD in Ceramics, during which he studied the illusory effects of application of black through to white to three-dimensional surfaces.

He is now based at the Fireworks Clay Studios in Cardiff and his intriguing work has been exhibited around the world, including the USA, Germany, France, South Korea, Australia and in the National Museum of Wales.

The 38-year-old has already established an international reputation for his ceramics and was a recent winner in Home and Gardens Designer Awards, named as the top China and Glass Designer for 2016.

He has developed a stunning style using concentric lines shaded from white through to black which gives his pieces tonal effects and three-dimensional spatial illusions which challenge the eye.

Carly Maidment, Bellway’s regional sales manager, said: “Jin’s ceramics style is very eye-catching and we are delighted to give him an opportunity to extend his boundaries by creating this piece of public art for us.

“It will also be a nice touch for our residents to each have a specially-designed house number on the front of their new home.

“I can’t wait to see what Jin comes up with and I’m sure that his artwork for the pump station will offer an added dimension for our new residents at Edenbrook.”
