Here at Compare My Move, we have been looking through our removals data to find out which major English city is the most loyal to their city, by seeing what percentage of movers in that city are moving to somewhere else in the city.
Staying in the place you love is very popular among movers, with many opting to stay in the same town/city, postcode and region. – Compare My Move data has found that:

34.7% of movers move to a different property in the same town/city.

39.1% of movers move to a different property in the same postcode.
-
65% of movers move to a different property in the same region.
When it comes to the home countries retaining their citizens, 95.9% of all English movers decided to move somewhere else in England – beating second place, Scotland, by 11.6% of movers and third place, Wales, by 21.5% of movers.
Below is a chart showing the percentage of movers who have moved within their home nations.
Although England has the highest percentage of movers staying in the country when they move, it’s a Scottish city that takes the top spot, Glasgow, with 55.3% of its movers staying in the city, beats the most loyal English city, Liverpool by 2.9%.
At the bottom end of the scale, some of the biggest cities in the UK, Birmingham and Manchester, are failing to keep their citizens in the city, with only 36.6% and 37.4% of their movers staying respectively.
The top 15 most loyal cities in the UK are listed below, ranked by the percentage of movers who stay in the city when they move.

Glasgow isn’t the only Scottish city to make the top 5, Edinburgh comes in at 5th with 49.2% of all its movers moving to somewhere else in the city, only slightly falling behind London. Not only does Liverpool comfortably come out as the most loyal English city, but it also beats its neighbouring North West city, Manchester, by 15% of movers.
One of the major reasons movers in Birmingham are opting to leave Birmingham would be the crime rate. Between 2021 and 2022, Birmingham saw a 20.5% increase in crime incidents, while the UK statistics only rose by 1.1%. According to Varbes, The West Midlands saw a higher crime rate than London, and Birmingham is the biggest contributor to this.

“Each of the top 3 most loyal cities has a relatively cheap house price, and I think that this plays a massive part in whether people want to stay in the place they are moving from. For instance, in 2021, 52.2% of Londoners moved to somewhere else in London, this has now dropped to 50.4%. This is simply because, with the high mortgage rates and inflated London house prices, it is impossible to afford a mortgage there for some people. Another instance of this is seeing Manchester so low down the list while Liverpool is the top English city for loyalty, this is due to average house prices in Manchester being almost £300,000 and the average in Liverpool being just over £215,000.
