Roof leaks are a common problem in the UK, and the likelihood of experiencing one depends heavily on where you live. A recent study conducted by the Guildford Roofing Contractor analytics department ranked 63 UK cities based on their average rainfall per year and the demand for roof repair services in each area.
The study found that Truro, a city located in Cornwall, has the leakiest roofs in the UK, followed by Newry, Leeds, Preston, and Plymouth. On the other hand, Cambridge is the least leaky city in the UK, followed by St. David and Bristol.
Unfortunately for our Welsh readers, two Welsh cities are in the top 10. If you live in Swansea (position 10) you might want to get a good roofing firm on speed dial, and if youāre in Bangor (position 7) you definitely will!
The study also identified the UK counties with the most leaky-roofed towns. The counties with the highest likelihood of experiencing roof leaks are shown in darker blue on a map. Interestingly, the study found that being located down south does not guarantee a dry life, as Plymouth and Truro, both located in the south, ranked high on the list of leakiest cities.
The study’s findings have important implications for urban greening initiatives, such as the London Plan and the Living Roofs and Walls policy, which aim to increase green space and living roofs in urban areas. These initiatives could help reduce the demand for roof repair services in leak-prone cities by improving the quality of roofs and reducing the impact of rainfall.
The Green Homes Grant, a government scheme that provides funding for energy-efficient home improvements, including green roofs, could also be a valuable tool in promoting urban greening and reducing the likelihood of roof leaks.
Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the leakiness of roofs in UK cities and highlights the need for effective solutions to address this issue. By promoting urban greening and investing in roof repair and maintenance, cities can reduce the impact of rainfall and improve the quality of life for their residents.
