Asda reveals thrifty Brits are resorting to dinner dates at home, with research revealing that 70% of couples are dining out less due to the rising cost of living
Despite the good intentions behind home-cooked meals for two, almost half (45%) of partners surveyed admit to serving up a mealtime disaster after overstating their cooking ability
Lasagne is the nation’s favourite romantic meal at home, but also the one we are most likely to mess up
To help couples elevate their dine-in date nights, Asda has launched Bistro: a new range of pre-prepared comfort meals with a £10 Dine In Deal for two
Whether it’s a candlelit dinner or a takeaway for two, mealtimes bring people together. Nevertheless, as purses continue to feel the pinch, couples are ditching pricey restaurants for at-home date nights, with research revealing that 70% are dining out less due to the cost of living.
Whilst a home-cooked meal may initially seem romantic, the nation is struggling to recreate the restaurant experience at home, with almost half (45%) admitting to serving up a mealtime disaster after overstating their cooking ability. Maybe that’s why a third of Brits (36%) admit they’d pass off a quality ready meal as their own work if they could get away with it.
Lack of culinary skills (48%), time restraints (13%) and forgetting to buy ingredients (7%) have been found to be the main killers of ‘at-home’ date nights, with 76% of Brits admitting to having five meals or less in their cooking repertoire.
The new research, conducted by Asda, has also revealed the UK’s favourite date night dishes, with lasagne taking the top spot. The nation’s top ten date night meals are:
Lasagne
Steak with peppercorn sauce
Fish, chips and peas
Spaghetti carbonara
Shepherd’s Pie
Cottage Pie
Macaroni Cheese
Steak & Ale Pie
Chicken Kiev
Beef Stroganoff
To help couples replicate the restaurant experience at home, Asda has launched four new ranges of premium pre-prepared meals, marking a total makeover of the Asda meal solution range. Alongside Bom Bahia, House of Yum and Takeout Club, Bistro by Asda offers high-end hearty favourites at fantastic value – without a lengthy recipe.
Bistro by Asda champions quality comfort food, with hero products including Chicken, King Prawn & Chorizo Paella (£6), Lasagne Al Forno (£6) and Chicken Kiev with Wild Garlic Butter. In addition to the new range, Asda will be launching a new £10 Dine In Deal for Two, which includes a starter, main, dessert and side dish for just £10, saving customers £5.
Partners looking to patch up their past cooking mistakes can claim the pre-prepared meals as their own home cooking, with products such as the Bistro Runny Scotch Egg (£4), succulent British Steak & Ale Pies (£6) and decadent Potato Dauphinoise (£2.50) guaranteed to impress.
Each dish is made using authentic cooking methods and the highest quality ingredients, with the full Bistro meal deal range consisting of five starters, ten mains, seven sides and five desserts. Unlike other supermarket meal deals, Asda’s £10 Meal Deal for Two includes a starter and a dessert, meaning that after enjoying scrumptious starters such as the Mushroom & Truffle Arancini (£4), Tempura King Prawns (£4) and French Brie Wedges (£4) customers with a sweet tooth won’t have to miss out. Offering indulgent desserts such as Sticky Toffee Pudding (£2.50), Espresso Tiramisu Cups (£2.50) and the Melt in the Middle Belgian Chocolate Puddings (£2.50), the Bistro range brings restaurant style dining directly into the home, without a hefty price tag.
Linsey Taylor, Senior Director for New Product Development at Asda said:
“As part of Asda’s ongoing mission to deliver products which offer fantastic quality, taste and value, Bistro by Asda forms part of a wider meal solution range which has seen a multi-million-pound investment from the business.
Bistro by Asda is ideal for those looking for fuss-free, premium meals, with the new £10 Dine In Deal enabling customers to replicate the restaurant experience at home.”
Shoppers can claim the deal in-store at Asda or through the website from the 17th of October.
Bistro is part of a total makeover of the Asda meal solution range, with over 300 new and improved lines launching across all cuisines. The ranges of pre-prepared meals include Bom Bahia, House of Yum, Bistro and Takeout Club and are available to buy in-store and online at Asda.com.
