Councillor Eryl Morgan is the new Chair of Carmarthenshire County Council for the year 20167-17.
Cllr Morgan was elected as Chair at the Annual Meeting of the County Council and Cllr Irfon Jones was elected as Vice Chair.
A native of Llanelli, Cllr Morgan lives in the town’s Capel Isaf Road. He was educated at Halfway Primary School and Llanelli Grammar School, before studying at Ruskin College, Oxford, and through the Open University. He has a BA in Social Science, a Certificate qualifying in Social Work and Probation; a Diploma in Applied Social Studies; and is qualified as a Mental Health Practitioner under the 1983 Mental Health Act.
Cllr Morgan is married to wife Jean, who is Chair’s Consort and has a daughter Georgina Estelle. He represents the Bigyn ward on the county council and is a retired Social Worker and Probation Officer.
He has represented the county on the West Wales Valuation Tribunal – Joint Appointing Panel (substitute member), and has had a previous stint as a member of the county council with his term ending in May 2008. He is a former Governor of Pwll and Furnace Primary Schools, and a former member of Llanelli Town Council. He is currently a member of Llanelli & District Credit Union – sitting as volunteer on the Loans Committee.
Cllr Morgan’s other interests are general sports and he is a former soccer referee and qualified football coach.
New Vice Chair
The new Vice Chair Cllr Irfon Jones hails from Bronwydd, where he still lives. He was educated at Cynwyl Elfed and the Grange, Carmarthen.
Cllr Jones, who is retired, is married to wife Jean and has two children Paul and Sharon.
He represents the county on the Governing Bodies of Cynwuyl Elfed Primary School and Llanpumsaint School, and is a Trustee of Oriel Myrddin, Carmarthen. He is a Trustee of Bronwydd Cricket Club and a Founder Member of Bro Myrddin Indoor Bowling Club. He is a Life Member of Carmarthen Quins RFC and a member of Carmarthen Golf Club.
