REVEALED: Selena Gomez’s social media timeline, after losing 31,907 Instagram followers announcing her most recent social media break 

New findings from nodepositfriend.com have analysed online interest in Selena Gomez’s social media breaks following her latest announcement of ‘going off socials for a while’ and ‘focusing on what matters’. The singer and actress has lost 31,907 followers following her most recent announcement and has fans questioning how many social breaks she has taken over the years. 

 2016 –  

Selena Gomez first announced in August 2016 that she was taking a break, from the spotlight and social media, to focus on her health with symptoms related to lupus. At the time, Gomez had 103 million followers on Instagram and returned to social media 14 weeks later, sharing a black and white photo with her fans on Thanksgiving which accumulated 56,000 likes within the first two minutes.  

2017 – 

In 2017 Gomez’s Instagram account was hacked and posted paparazzi pictures of ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber naked, she regained access to her account later that day. Gomez went on to do an interview with The New York Times revealing she that deletes Instagram from her phone at least once a week. 

2018 – 

In September 2018, Gomez announced she’s taking some time off social media again. She updated the caption of her latest posted mirror selfie to inform her 143 million followers at the time. Her updated caption wrote “taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi.” 

2019 –  

On January 14th, 2019, Gomez officially returned back from her social media break just shy of four months. Gomez posted three black-and-white shots of herself with the caption “Last year was definitely a year of self-reflection, challenges and growth. It’s always those challenges which show you who you are and what you are capable of overcoming. Trust me, it’s not easy, but I am proud of the person I am becoming and look forward to the year ahead.” The post surpassed 7.6 million likes in under 24 hours of posting.  

 2020 –  

In July 2020, not long after celebrating her 28th birthday, Gomez posted a one-minute-long Instagram video sharing an update with her fans on why she had been taking some time away from social media. The video was posted after a one–week social media break.  

2021 – 

In March 2021, the singer-actress told Vogue that she had been off the internet for three years and would send photos and captions to her assistant to post on social media on her behalf. In the interview, she claimed she mainly gets her news updates from an older woman that she is close with.  

2022 –  

On the 5th of April 2022, Gomez continued to say she had been off the internet for four years in her Good Morning America interview.  

2023 –  

In February, Gomez found herself going viral with drama involving Justin Bieber’s wife Hailey Bieber and announced during a TikTok Live “I’m going to be taking a second from social media, because this is a little silly. I’m 30, I’m too old for this. But I love you guys so much and I will see you guys sooner than later.” She added, “I’m just gonna take a break from everything,” 

Gomez then deactivated her TikTok account, before reactivating it just hours later, according to a fan account, which reported the singer’s account was made active once again later that night.  

Later, in the year in October, Gomez took another social media break amid backlash and the Isreal-Hamas conflict and quoted “my heart breaks to see all of the horror, hate, violence and terror that’s going on in the world”. Gomez’s social media break was short-lived as she posted one week later an Instagram Story of her while wearing an apron and holding a plate of food.

2024 –  

January 9th, 2024 is the latest social media break announcement from Gomez amid drama following the Golden Globes involving Timothee Chalamet, 28 and Kylie Jenner, 26. The Instagram announcement to her 429 million followers’ quotes ‘I’m off social for a while,’ and ‘I’m focusing on what really matters.’. The singer-actress has also lost 29,191 Instagram followers in 24 hours since the announcement.
