Communities are being asked to Start Something Good in Carmarthenshire

Carmarthenshire’s Community Challenge, launched by the Prince of Wales earlier this month as part of the first Start Wales Festival in the National Botanic Garden of Wales, is about reducing our footprint and impact on the planet. It is the follow-up to a pilot project carried out in Ferryside during 2009 to encourage residents to reduce their carbon footprint, and is a joint initiative for Carmarthenshire county council and partners. This open challenge is issued to individuals and groups in the county, who will be given the opportunity and support to develop their own innovative and local solutions to the future challenges that we face.

Those projects and commitments that have made the biggest impact will be recognised and celebrated at the Start Wales Festival in September 2011. We are hoping that Carmarthenshire will be at the forefront of the Start initiative, inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales, and the Challenge will receive his support.

The Prince of Wales has praised Carmarthenshire for leading the way in sustainability during his recent visit to the National Botanic Gardens. He said “I am especially delighted that my home county of Carmarthenshire is leading the way in supporting communities to take the simple steps needed to make better use of the earth’s resources. I have met some inspiring examples of communities taking these positive steps, and I hope that the Carmarthenshire Community Challenge launched today can be a catalyst to expand this work”.

Any individual or group willing to make the commitment to being more sustainable, or have any ideas to reduce their footprint, is being asked to come forward.
