Family members Dave Cleaver, Sarah Williams and Lucy Murphy have raised a fantastic £1,555 for Respiratory Services at Prince Phillip Hospital.

They raised the funds in memory of Sue Cleaver, late wife of Dave and mother to Sarah and Lucy, as a thanks for the care she received.

The fundraising included a curry night held at Sultan Indian Restaurant in Llanelli on Thursday June 8th 2023, which was organised by friends of the family, Catherine and Anthony Davies.

Sarah said: “Our beautiful Mammy, Sue, passed away suddenly on February 12th 2023 after a long battle with lung cancer.

“She had received care and treatment at the Prince Philip clinic since being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2012. Following a successful surgery, unfortunately a new cancer was found in the other lung less than two years later but was again successfully removed due to prompt action from her surgeon.

“Mammy always spoke so highly of her surgeon and it was clear to see, from each appointment we attended with her, the mutual respect they had for each other.

“We can never thank him and his team enough. We also met so many wonderful Macmillan nurses who she would speak so highly of.

“As we write this, it is 10 months on, the pain is as deep as it was then, but knowing we can honour her memory by donating to the clinic, a part of Mammy’s story will live on with the people that kept her with us for so long, and we know how proud that would make her.

“From our family to the whole team involved with Mammy’s care over those years, we thank you. We’d also like to say a heartfelt thank you to our friend Catherine for organising the fundraising night and to her father Anthony who organised and carried out the quiz. Both were amazing.”

Patricia Rees, Lung Cancer Triage CNS, said: “I was privileged to have been involved in Sue’s care as a Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse, and during that time our relationship developed into a friendship. That’s what happened when you met Sue, she was such a wonderful, likeable lady, and I was so sad to hear of her passing.

“I was also very lucky to meet her lovely family. Her daughters were so supportive during Sue’s time under the care of the Lung Cancer Service in Prince Philip Hospital and always attended her appointments with her. For the family of Sue to have raised and donated monies in her name, it’s such an incredibly thoughtful way of remembering her, and we do appreciate what they have achieved at such a difficult time for the family.”

Dr Robin Ghosal said: “Susan was a remarkable woman. She had to face such health adversity and she always did this with a smile and sense of humour.

“She always managed to beat the odds and these qualities left their mark on the lung cancer team and me personally.

“I was saddened and shocked to hear of her passing. Her family have always supported her and have been extremely courteous even through testing times and this is a testament to Susan as a mother.

“I am very grateful for the donations provided to the lung cancer unit and this will benefit others with the condition. Susan is a great loss to the world, but I feel forever grateful for the opportunity to have met her and being able to help her.”

Claire Rumble, Carmarthenshire Fundraising Officer for the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
