Responding to comments from Welsh Government adviser Prof David Reynolds, who has questioned Welsh Government plans to cut infant class sizes, Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire AM Angela Burns said:

“Clearly, reducing class sizes will not be a silver bullet to solving the educational crisis facing Wales’ schools.

“With the evidence racking up as to a major teacher recruitment problem in Wales, it is unclear how this policy will be implemented, or whether school infrastructure – below-par under Labour – could accommodate any need for additional classes.

“Continuous professional development must be a priority for this Welsh Government, with an emphasis on renewed support for teachers essential. That’s why Welsh Conservatives have called for college of teaching focused on CPD and setting teacher standards.”
