Thought for the week from the Rev David Jones (we 1st April 2012)

The long awaited call from Steve our son in law brought the good news that Rhian our daughter had given birth to a lovely little girl.

We soon arrived at the hospital and there she was nestled in her mother’s arms unaware of the excitement that surrounded her.

By the time we returned home the BBC Sport Relief’ was on TV. I sat down to see the story of a little toddler called Bernard born in Sierra Leone where infant mortality is part of everyday life.

As a last resort Bernard’s father had rushed him to hospital where the doctors tried their best to revive him.

The father’s pain and pleading were almost too painful watch. A little boy fighting for his life which was eventually lost as the father cried out ‘Why him and not me?’

In that moment it was as if God was reminding me that on a day when I had been so greatly blessed that those like Bernard are also, be it in a less direct way, my responsibility as well.

The whole question of world poverty and the conditions in which millions are forced to live are complex with answers seemingly way out of our control.

Yet embedded in our faith is the calling Jesus give us to do what we can, however small, so that every child born into this world will have the God given right of a life free from hunger, exploitation and disease.

Sport relief encouraged us to go that extra mile. In doing just that we can bring hope and extend the boundaries of love and care to those who need it most.
