CHILDREN in Carmarthenshire have been finding out about the benefits of walking to school.
Pupils from Lakefield Primary School in Llanelli, Ponyates Primary School and Ysgol Feithrin Rhydaman all took part in Walk to School Week – joined by the council’s road safety mascot Gary Gosafe.
The national campaign encourages children and their parents as well as teachers to leave the car at home and walk or cycle to school instead.
Not only is it healthier as it helps keep you fit, but it is better for the environment by cutting down on pollution and it is educational – children can learn to use the roads safely and responsibly. It is also less stressful than driving and can help you save money!
Executive Board Member for Transport Cllr Hazel Evans said: “Walking to school can be fun and a great opportunity for some regular exercise.
“Large numbers of cars parked outside schools can be dangerous for children crossing the road. They also produce a concentration of exhaust fumes and children are among those groups who are most at risk from air pollution.
“By walking to school children will also be able to practise their road safety skills.”
