Peace Symposium

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK’s National Peace Symposium was held on Saturday 9th March at Baitul Futuh Mosque in London, and was attended by 1200 guests from 28 countries. Some of the politicians present included Ed Davey, the leader of Liberal Democrats, Dame Siobhan McDonagh, MP for Mitcham and Morden and Chandrakant Arya, MP from Canada who travelled across to attend the Peace Symposium.

All the speakers expressed their concerns regarding the ongoing conflicts in the world, especially between Israel and Palestine. The keynote speech was delivered by His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the worldwide Head and Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Peace Symposium

Referencing the current conflicts between Russia and Ukraine and Israel and Palestine, His Holiness emphasised the urgent need for peace and warned of the dire consequences of further escalation and a global nuclear war. His Holiness said:

If we wish to save our future generation from being born with the ill effects of radiation caused by nuclear warfare, and desire to save them from deprivation and desperation we must act with urgency and wisdom. Political leaders and those who have access to policymakers must take a long-term view of what is in the best interest of mankind, rather than being blinded by selfish desires to assert their superiority over others. We must all come together, setting aside national, political and other vested interests, for the greater good of humanity.

Speaking about the role of all religions in establishing peace throughout history, His Holiness said:

Peace Symposium

None of the founders of the major religions, including Jesusas, Mosesas, Holy Prophet Muhammadsa, or any other prophet of God, ever taught their followers to disregard the peace of society and resort to aggression…

“Islam literally means peace, and every aspect of its teachings reflects this name.

During the event, two peace prizes were awarded. One to Adi Roche from the charity, ‘Chernobyl Children’s Project International’ and the other to David Spurdle from the charity, ‘Stand By Me’ for their efforts towards world peace. Adi and David received £10,000 each for their charities.

Reflecting on the event and speech of His Holiness, Ed Davey, the leader of Liberal Democrats said:

We need world leaders like His Holiness to speak up. We need all politicians to listen hard and take action to get the peace we all want. His Holiness is always inspirational. I have had the huge honour to hear him at many peace symposiums and I can tell you they do make a difference.

The event concluded with the Caliph leading all attendees in silent prayer. Thereafter all attendees were served delicious Indian cuisine prepared by the volunteers of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK.
