New York Times bestselling author pens a new book inspired by one of the tales from the Mabinogion

Newport-based bestselling author Catherine Fisher has been inspired by the traditional folk tales of the Mabinogion for her latest book, Culhwch and Olwen. In her retelling of one of the most famous stories from the ancient collection, Culhwch falls madly in love with Olwen, the daughter of the terrible giant Yspaddaden, Chief of Giants. But Olwen’s father isn’t happy about the pairing and sets Cuhlwch a test – he must complete several perilous feats and bring him the many magical gifts he desires in order to marry Olwen.

An exciting and enchanting adventure that has been written in various forms since the fourteenth century, this new take on the tale and its characters makes them accessible to a modern readership, offering an insight into Welsh history and culture as well as a love story for the ages that children across the UK can enjoy.

Black and white illustrations by well-known Welsh illustrator Efa Lois perfectly complement this traditional story of courage and adventure.

Culhwch and Olwen is the first book to be published by Graffeg’s new middle-grade and YA imprint, Cadno. Cadno focuses on publishing new content for children aged 7-16 with uniquely Welsh content. Future titles will look at racism in football, LGBTQ+ romance and looking after the environment, all with a link to Wales or Welsh culture.
