More than 1800 school pupils have taken part in a safety awareness event over the past two weeks.

Organised by the Safer Neath Port Talbot Partnership, Crucial Crew is held annually to raise awareness of personal safety and crime prevention amongst primary school pupils aged 10 to 11. Every primary school in Neath Port Talbot is given the opportunity to attend the event which is growing in popularity each year.

Held at Margam Park, pupils have the opportunity to take part in 10 minute interactive workshops led by organisations linked to the Partnership. Pupils learn about topics such as how to tackle dangers, playing safely, what action to take in the event of a fire, the effects of drugs and alcohol and how to stay safe on the roads.

Each year the Partnership holds an open session for invited guests to view the good work of Crucial Crew.

Karen Jones, the Council’s Head of Corporate Strategy and Democratic Services said:

“Events such as Crucial Crew are vital to helping young people learn life skills. With so many organisations participating in the event, it provides an excellent opportunity to pass on invaluable knowledge outside of the classroom.”

This year’s Crucial Crew is sponsored by Tata Steel and supported by NPT Road Safety Unit, South Wales Police, NPT Schools Peer Educators, NPT Recycle, Mid and West Wales Fire Service, the Food Standards Agency, Western Power Distribution, Port Talbot and Afan Womens Aid, Calan DVS, Hafan Cymru, RNLI, SWWITCH Schools Transport, NPT Playworks, Network Rail, WCADA and National Assembly for Wales – Youth Engagement.

The two week event ran from Monday 6th June and finishes on Friday 17th June.
