Ranking in first place with over £1.9 Billion pounds in profit, is Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, which came to cinemas in 2019. The sequel to Avengers: Infinity war was highly anticipated due to the raging success of the franchise and the amount of open-ended storylines that were yet to be completed. Not only was the film well received by audiences, it also earned nearly £600 million pounds more than its predecessor.

In second place with nearly £1.6 billion pounds in profit is Avatar: The way of Water, by James Cameron. The title had an enormous expectation to live up to due to the success of Avatar, which despite coming out over a decade earlier, had grossed over £2 billion pounds in profit. This made it the most successful box office movie of all time, a title which the film still holds to this day.

The third most profitable sequel in film is Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens that amassed over £1.4 billion pounds in profit at box office. Being the successor to any Star Wars film within the franchise is a daunting prospect due to the die hard fan base and overwhelming pressure that resides in continuing the legacy of a series that has spanned over 40 plus years. However J.J.Abrams managed to create one of the most profitable sequels of all time.

Avengers: Infinity War ranks in fourth place, making it the second film within a single film series to rank among the top five. The title produced a staggering £1.3 billion pounds in profit at the box office, which when combined with its successor – Avengers: End game, generates a total of over £3.2 billion pounds in profit. The franchise isn’t done there either as across the coming years, Marvel have several new titles to come, all of which could potentially make the list.

Rounding off the top five is yet another Marvel title in Spider-Man: No Way Home which also boasts over £1.3 billion pounds in profit. The success of this film was aided by early leaks that audiences may see all three actors who have played Spider-Man in the 21st century featured in a multiversal concoction of excitement. As soon as the film was released, fans learned that this was true and three generations of Spider-Man fans were able to enjoy the newest release, making it one of the most profitable movie sequels to date.
