Gavin and Stacey is one of the most popular and followed British sitcoms, while playing poker online has become one of the most popular pastimes. It has had multiple seasons and special comeback episodes without being canceled like other shows from the same generation. The news broke earlier this year that the BBC had commissioned a finale episode with James Corden and Ruth Jones, having written one final script for it. But how would the characters in the show get on in a game of poker?

Gavin Shipman, Fold and Fold

Gavin Shipman, portrayed by Mathew Horne, is a character who values harmony above all else. His Essex upbringing may suggest a more aggressive approach, but his kind-hearted nature and naivety often take the lead. In a poker game, he’d likely adopt a reserved stance, folding frequently to avoid confrontation. However, if he were to believe he had a winning hand and then lost, his disappointment would be palpable and would lead him to the tilt effect.

Stacey Shipman, Inconsistent Tactic

The other title character, Stacey Shipman, is known to be a friendly and outgoing Welsh woman but can often display ‘scatterbrain’ tendencies. While playing poker she’d probably enjoy the social aspects a bit too much and talk over the game about other topics or even reveal what cards she has! She would probably play with impulse and the scriptwriting would be very well placed to have her win a hand right at the death despite her having no idea she had won!

Smithy, Aggressive Raiser

Potentially, the most popular character, Smithy, played by the divisive James Corden, is a loudmouth with a vibrant personality who would be the life of the poker table. He consistently raises and tries to psyche out his adversaries, even if he has a feeble hand. He’d quickly raise despite having no chance of winning, just for fun. He would probably get somewhat irked when another player called his bluff, probably Nessa after Smithy had done it a few too many times!

Nessa, Unable to Determine

Nessa is one of the most mysterious characters in the show, and her past consistently brings up new stories and details about her, while she’s also the easiest character to imagine actually indulging herself from the caravan to get the best poker online experience from these rooms. She is known for her deadpan humor and emotional control, as she seldom is seen to be deterred by untoward events. These qualities would serve her bountifully on the poker table as she could separate each hand and not bring emotions from prior results. She’d also give nothing away with her distinct lack of emotion on her face. It’s easy to imagine a scene where Smithy thought he had won after an impressive hand, only for Nessa to reveal a Royal Flush with little emotion other than taking the chips from the table.

Bryn West, Over-Excited at the Table

Stacey’s uncle, Bryn West, is an eccentric character who brings a lot of vigor and excitement to every activity he does. While often a good attribute, it can lead to awkward situations as he comes off too enthusiastic. In a game of poker, Bryn could provide some hilarious moments; when he gets a good hand, he’d hardly be able to contain himself and would be bursting at the seams with joy. He’d just be happy to be involved, which would probably annoy the other players.

Gwen West, Long Game Strategy

Branded as the ‘voice of reason’ amongst a shroud of chaos for the other characters, Gwen West often restores order. She would steadily play poker without the need to play high-risk hands or make knee-jerk reactions. Her cool, calm, and collected manner would ensure she wouldn’t lose all her chips in one hand. She would also be the character to help others when their game has gone awry, i.e. Smithy would be comforted by Gwen after he lost all his chips to Nessa when he thought he was going to win.

Dave Coaches, Wouldn’t Understand

Local driving instructor, Dave Coaches could easily find himself at the poker table to make up the numbers if another player pulled out at the last minute. Seen as rather dim-witted, he’d definitely not understand all the rules but try to get on with it. This could lead to humourous segments like him asking to stick or twist, as he thinks he’s playing blackjack or another game entirely.
