Scarlets launch ‘Heart and Soul Rugby’ scheme to champion development

The Scarlets have unveiled an innovative new initiative aligned their focus on the development of Welsh rugby talent – giving all registered referees as well as coaches and players in junior rugby sections across the region, free access to Scarlets home games this season.

The new scheme, a first in Welsh regional rugby by the Scarlets, pays tribute to those working hard to support and develop grass-roots rugby.

The Scarlets are opening their stadium doors for free to the region’s 44+ junior clubs (u16) players and coaches as well as all registered referees in Wales in tribute to the hard work being done behind the scenes to develop Welsh rugby.

Scarlets Commercial Director, Rupert Moon said: “We recognise and respect that junior clubs are the lifeblood of our game and heart and soul of our rugby community. Our success in the future, depends on the valued support and partnerships that we have with our clubs and we want to highlight the excellent work being done within mini and junior rugby sections across Wales.

“Offering referees and junior clubs the freedom of Parc y Scarlets is our way of recognising the loyalty and passion that exists within the junior game in Wales and to thank our clubs for their support.  A lot of time and effort is given freely by those running the junior game in Wales and we want to celebrate that contribution.

“Our focus on the development of Welsh talent from within is core to our future and as part of that we want to open our doors to the many unsung heroes of rugby development, those who support and inspire our young rugby players of the future.

“We’ve also opened this out to all registered referees in Wales as a mark of respect for the difficult and challenging work that they do week-in-week out.  They are a vital part of the fabric of Welsh rugby.”

The initiative is open to the region’s junior sections from under 8’s to under 16’s – allowing them to experience the unique match day experience at Parc y Scarlets and to see their heroes in action and help inspire the next generation of Scarlets.

The initiative was launched this week at a joint Scarlets/Ospreys press conference held at Scarlets sponsors’ Schaeffler Group’s INA facility based on the Loughor estuary – where Swansea meets Llanelli, ahead of the region’s big derby against their near neighbours this Saturday at Parc y Scarlets.

World renowned referee, Nigel Owens who is officiating at the the Scarlets v Ospreys fixture, this Saturday at Parc y Scarlets at 8.10pm joined up with Scarlets Commercial Director Rupert Moon at Parc y Scarlets earlier this week to give his backing to the scheme.
