In reaction to the Wales-specific statistics in the ONS’s Household Below Average Income statistics for 2014-15 published today

Responding to new data on Households Below Average Income, Kirsty Davies-Warner, Head of Oxfam Cymru, said, “These figures once again show that Wales has a significant challenge in tackling poverty. We have the highest levels of relative poverty of any country in the UK and people in work are more likely to be experience poverty than ever before.

“It is unacceptable that so many families are struggling in Wales – facing difficulty with everyday essentials like putting a hot meal on the table or heating their home.

“These figures should make it clear to Welsh Government that tackling poverty must be a top priority in their new Programme for Government, a clear theme running through all portfolio areas. Ā While many of the levers for tackling poverty lie at Westminster, we know from our programme work in Wales that more could be done. Ā We want to work with the Welsh Government to tackle poverty here in Wales.”
