Tory austerity and Labour mismanagement of the NHS to blame for GP crisis, says Plaid Cymru

A needs-based funding model for Wales is essential to ensuring primary care and the NHS in Wales is properly funded.

Llinos Medi, Plaid Cymru’s candidate for Ynys MĂ´n, has blamed Tory austerity and Labour’s mismanagement of the NHS in Wales for the falling number of GPs, reduced appointments, and a possible hundredth practice closure in just over a decade.

Plaid Cymru have pledged fair funding for Wales from Westminster to tackle the “deep-rooted problems within our NHS and primary care sector” by recruiting 500 GPs across Wales and restoring funding to primary care to 8.7% of the NHS – reversing a decade of Labour cuts.

Plaid Cymru candidate for Ynys MĂ´n, Llinos Medi said:

“Plaid Cymru is the only party fighting for fair funding for Wales in this election to invest in our economy, NHS and public services.

“Years of Tory cuts and Labour mismanagement has left the NHS on its knees. Doctors and nurses are overworked and underpaid. There aren’t enough GP appointments available meaning patients are having to wait far too long for the care they need.

“Take Holyhead for example. Primary care was on the verge of collapse only a few short years ago. Not enough has been done since then by Labour in Cardiff to follow up on their promises to ensure the long-term resilience of primary care in the town.

“Plaid Cymru have a clear plan for resolving the deep-rooted problems within our NHS and primary care sector, which includes investing in the workforce and recruiting 500 additional GPs across Wales.  This would not only increase the number of appointments available for patients, but also take the burden off our vital medical professionals.”

“While the Tories self-implode, and Labour keep taking Wales for granted, only a strong Plaid Cymru voice in Westminster will make sure Wales gets its fair share of funding that would  allow us to solve the challenges facing primary care sector in places like Ynys MĂ´n.”
